Collecting a new Beehive

The day the kids went back to school I  received a call from someone in our ward asking if we wanted to come and take car of a natural beehive in their yard.  I  called Matt and we headed over there asap.  It was amazing to see the hive they had built under some wood pallets.  They were very mellow bees and didn't mind us bothering their home.  We tried to find the queen but didn't have much luck.  So we started to take out the brood and honeycomb and transfer it into our boxes.  After we got as much as we could we used a shop vac to vacuum up the bees.  We then headed back over to mom and dads to see if we could find the queen and put together our new hive.  Plus we had some honey to process.  We looked for quite awhile and couldn't find the Queen so dad got online and ordered us a new one.  We ran into a little bit of a problem when we realized we had our shop vac to strong and we lost more then 3/4 of our hive by killing them in the vacuums.  We were so bummed but you live and learn.  We learned a lot this time around and hopefully that wont be the last time we get to save a hive.
