Right before school started and right after we sent Preston off I got a text from Dean telling me his nurse Mike he works with was taking him to the ER. He has always had trouble swallowing and this gets him in trouble sometimes with choking. He has had a few big scares but has always been able to eventually get the food to go down. Well, he was eating his lunch at work that Monday....it was roast, and he got some stuck in his throat. He was in a panic and had people help him but it wouldn't come out. He had just enough airway to get a little shallow breath in but it the roast would't come out. Mike rushed him to the ER and they got him right back. When I got there he was in the back with his iv in and getting all the medicine. He kept choking and throwing up his spit because he had know where to swallow it. He was not in a good spot and the nurses said the Dr. would't be in tell 2:30. Dean had got there at 12:30 and had been chocking since 12:00. He was not in a good place to have to wait that long. He tried to stay calm so he could manage the breathing, but just kept throwing up. Even with the throwing up this roast would not come out. When it became close to 3:00 and we still hadn't heard from a Dr. I was getting mad. Finally a nurse came in and said they were on their way to get us for Surgery. I got to follow them up to the surgery room and then went and waited in the waiting room. The surgery was really fast and he was done and awake in under an hour. He felt so much better and looked so much better when I was able to see him. The Dr. told us he had built up ridges and scare tissue in his throat most likely from allergies or being allergic to something and it had closed off his throat over the years. They stretched it out to the size of a nickel but would like it to be the size of a quarter so we will be back in about 3 months after taking some steroids to see if that helps with the scaring and we will go from there. He took about a week to even want to try real food. His throat was sore and it was hard/ painful to swallow. We will just have to wait and see in a couple months what to do next to help him.
